Present Continuous Tense
Definition/Introduction
Present progressive narrates an action that is being
continued or getting to be continued within the near future. It uses am/is/are
and “ing” is added with the verb.
For instance, a boy says" I'm drinking water" It means that the action (drinking water) is being done exactly this time of speaking.
This tense is also called the present progressive tense.

Structure of Sentence
• Main verb: Present Participle (a Base form of verb + ing) e.g eating, drinking, looking, doing.
• Auxiliary verb: "is, am, are".

► NOTE:
• If the subject of the sentence is "I" then the auxiliary verb "am" will be used in the sentence.
• If the subject of the sentence is "She, He, It" or a singular noun then the auxiliary verb "is" will be used in the sentence.
• If the subject of the sentence is "We, You, They" or a plural noun then the auxiliary verb "are" will be used in the sentence.
Positive Sentence
Subject + Auxiliray verb + main verb.
Subject + (is/am/are) + Present Participle verb (verb+ing).
► Example:
• She is making tea.
• She is cleaning her room.
• He is drinking water.
• He is going on the road.
• Kids are playing cricket.
• They are walking on the lawn.
• You are eating some food.
• He is writing a letter.
Negative Sentence
Subject + Auxiliary verb + not + main verb.
Subject + is/am/are+ not + Present Participle verb(verb+ ing).
► Example:
• You are not eating your food.
• She is not listening to her voice.
• She is not laughing.
• They are not waiting for you.
• I'm not replying to him.
• I'm not appreciating you.
• They are not coming to school
• She is not writing a letter.
Interrogative Sentence
Auxiliary verb + subject + main verb.
Is/am/are + subject + Present Participle verb(verb +ing)
► Example:
• Are you listening to me?
• Is he calling you?
• Are you laughing at me?
• Is she planning for her studies?
• Are you running on the road?
• Is she not writing a letter?
• Are you not eating your food?
• Are they not coming to school?
• Are they listening to
the teacher?
• Is the baby drinking his
bottle?
• Are you going?
When to not use Present Continuous Tense
There are certain verbs that can't be utilized in this
progressive. the subsequent verbs are non-continuous:
• Communication: agree, promise, surprise.
• Feelings: like love, hate.
• Senses: hear, see, smell, taste.
• Thinking: belief, know, understand.
The Importance of Present Continuous Tense

in English grammar to explain an unbroken action, something that is unfinished.
This tense is additionally important since it's an easy syntax which will show
