Definition of Present Tense


Generally, simple present is employed to point an action which happens – always, regularly, every day, daily, normally, generally, usually, occasionally, sometimes, often, rarely, frequently, nowadays, naturally, seldom, constantly, never, every week, per annum, once a year, on a week, at times, at the present, now then, or all the time.

Simple Present Tense





Generally, a simple present is employed to point to an action that happens. It is used to describe habits, unchanging situations, general truths, and fixed arrangements.

To form the simple present:

  • Subject + base form of the verb
·         add “s” to third-person singular


Used of Simple Present Tense


To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions, and wishes:

 I smoke (habit); I add London (unchanging situation); London is a large city (general truth)
To give instructions or directions:
 You walk for 2 hundred meters, then you switch left.
 To express fixed arrangements, present or future:
  Your exam starts at 09.00
 To express future time, after some conjunctions: after, when, before, as soon as, until:
 He'll provide it to you once you come next Saturday.



Examples of Simple Present Tense



 For habits

He drinks tea at breakfast.
She only eats fish.
They watch television regularly.

 For repeated actions or events

We catch the bus every morning.
It rains every afternoon within the hot season.
They drive to Monaco every summer.

 For general truths

Water freezes at zero degrees.
The Earth revolves around the Sun.
Her mother is Peruvian.
For instructions or directions

Open the packet and pour the contents into the predicament.
You take the No.6 bus to Watney then the No.10 to Bedford.

 For fixed arrangements

His mother arrives tomorrow.
Our holiday starts on the 26th of March

 With future constructions

She'll see you before she leaves.
We'll provide it to her when she arrives

 Positive

The sunsets within the west.

They enter their new home next week.

Jones stops in mid-court and passes the ball to Schuster.

Do you usually speak to him like that?
Ben goes to football practice every Tuesday.
In general, I think that each one of the people can sleep in peace.
Do you attend the supermarket every week?


Negative

I don’t just like the food they serve at that restaurant.
Jim doesn’t work on Fridays.
My friends don’t usually leave so early.

Interrogative

Do you surf the web every day?
Does your boss offer you positive feedback?
Does Jonathan always close up the lights?
Don’t you ever clean your room?
